Do You Get Enough Social Interaction?

When it comes to our health, being sociable can have tremendous health benefits. On the opposite end of the spectrum, being lonely can cause stress as well. Recent studies link loneliness with a few health issues.

Loneliness has links to cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. It is well known that cancers spread more easily and viruses become more virulent in the lonely as opposed those who do not report this feeling. A recent study points to the reason for this being because the chemicals loneliness triggers in our bodies may activate the fight or flight response.

In the past few decades, researches have noted that the immune systems of lonely people respond differently. Lonely individuals have more white blood cells, which causes inflammation in response to bacterial infections and wounds. They also show lower levels of antivirals known as interferons.

High inflammation levels are linked to cancer and depression, and the human body isn’t equipped to handle high levels of inflammation for years. This still doesn’t explain why loneliness affects our bodies. To find that out, Steve Cole, a genomics researcher conducted a study where he followed 141 people over the course of five years.

Every year, the participants were asked questions about how lonely they felt and had blood drawn. The levels of the hormone norephinephrine were also tracked through drawn blood. The study showed that the more loneliness participants felt, the higher the concentrations of norephinephrine in their blood. This could explain all of the immune changes when people experience loneliness.

The surge in norephinephrine, in turn, causes a surge in the production of white blood cells as the body prepares to fight off damage. This leads to a decrease in the production of antiviral cells. In a world where cubicles and studio apartments are everywhere, these findings are of concern. Loneliness can truly be one of the most damaging things that we experience.
