Dr.Oz- The Paleo Diet

General Thumbnail

Hello everybody. Welcome back here to Frank Tortorici.com.

What’s the deal with paleo? Dr.Oz recently aired a show on whether or not paleo is right for you.  Well, paleo, it’s basically a caveman diet. It’s lean meats, low glycemic fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and high plant fats. Minimal, no grains pretty much at all. For some, there’s limited dairy. For most, no dairy at all. Just rambling that off, it sounds like a pretty good thing. To be honest with you, paleo is not a fad. There is a great base there for anyone to lose weight. And perform as an athlete.

Now, this is the thing, though. The thing that I have a problem with with paleo is I feel, I’m a big believer in the whole acid and alkaline principle. I’m coming more from a standpoint of wellness and preventative lifestyle. Now, paleo again will get you to lose weight. It will get you to perform great as an athlete. What I’m not so convinced and sold on yet though with paleo is what’s it doing for preventative health care in the sense of preventing cancer?

As we all know, disease thrives in an acidic body. There are no animal products out there that are alkaline. All animal products are acid forming. So, when you look at some of the paleo meals, very heavy in butter. Grass fed butter and they touch on that, which is again right on the money. But, you know, I just don’t believe with waking up in the morning and breaking a fast, having breakfast, and having bacon with eggs and butter on it. To me, it just again, will it get your metabolism running and will it get you in that burning conditioning and that athletic conditioning, yes.

But again, if we’re talking one arena of conditioning as an athlete and losing weight, I think paleo is right on the money. But when we start talking about wellness, and somebody trying to deal with cancer or Tourette Syndrome, attention deficit, anything like that, paleo may be good for people with attention deficit and autism because it is a gluten free diet. But then the people that are dealing with cancer and Tourettes, blood pressure, things like that, a more alkaline system is going to be more of that person’s friend and approach.

Please also remember that anytime we’re discussing animal products, we’re always talking organic and pasture raised and pasture fed. Whenever we’re talking fruits and veggies, we’re talking non-GMO certified, as well as organic and locally grown.

But again at the end of the day, I do feel paleo for anyone looking for a quick fix and looking to lose weight, I think it’s great. I do not see longevity in paleo and seeing somebody eat like this all the time. For 5, 10, 15 years and being healthy in the long run. Having a healthy liver and kidney and colon.

Again, it’s a very high acid diet and very, very high in animal proteins, which wreak havoc on the liver and kidneys and then end up getting stuck in the colon if it’s not passed through that easily, which 9 times out of 10 animal products are not. So, I approach paleo with more of a balance. I look at it like my plate is about 25 percent animal protein just once a day. Sometimes twice. Everything else is plant based. For me, it works best and just due to the studies of the greats like Dr. Mercola, Gary Null, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, the proof is in the pudding. Gabriel Cousins, about living a more alkaline lifestyle.

You make the call if paleo is right for you. And obviously always do the research before you do anything. Because understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing is key to any health regimen or lifestyle.
