Fort Worth Embarks on Blue Zones Experiment

Embarking on a health and wellness routine is hard when done alone and without support. Numerous studies show that those who have a support network behind them are often more successful than those who do not have such a system. When a whole community gets behind the effort, results are usually positive for the community as a whole.

Fort Worth, Texas, is taking part in an ambitious experiment that hopes to improve the lives of its residents. The project, called Blue Zones, has a $50-million dollar investment behind it with the aim of transforming the city into a national model of health and wellness.

Since its launch earlier this year, Blue Zones is gaining momentum. Restaurants and grocery stores are offering healthier fare. Businesses are taking part by boosting their own wellness programs. More than 8,000 residents have signed a pledge to lead healthier lives.

The term Blue Zones was coined by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic fellow who cataloged places on earth where people live the longest, healthiest lives.

To measure results, Fort Worth will work with Gallup polls to measure the health and wellness of its citizens annually. In the opening poll, it was found that Fort Worth lagged well behind Texas and the rest of the nation.

Despite overwhelming initial support, the project has not been without push back. Mike Sweet, president of the Food Division of the Ben E. Keith Co., stated that he heard from his employees just once. The Blue Zones approved employer stated there were complaints when they replaced chicken-fried steak with kale salad. A local food bank reported that after they removed candy from vending machines, the director received a note in all capital letters: WE WANT OUR CHOCOLATE.
