Gardener Donates Organic Food to Low-Income Individuals

When it comes to food and fighting disease, many experts will say that fresh and organic is best. However, fresh and organic foods are out of reach of many low-income budgets. Especially when those with the low-income are facing diseases like cancer.

A Huntsville, Alabama woman has been gardening for nine years. However, what Cathy Wissel is growing isn’t for personal use or for sale. Everything she grows is harvested and donated to Manna House and other organizations.

Wissel doesn’t focus on specific seasons. She is well aware that her endeavors help to feed the hungry and that is not limited to any particular time of year.

Wissel’s three acre garden is free of pesticides and opts for organic gardening. She knows this is better for the patients that Manna House helps.

Wissel picks her plants seven days a week during the summer and only a couple days a week during the winter. Still, she does not consider herself an expert gardener.

“I just plant the seeds in the ground and let the Lord take it from there,” she says.

Saxon T. Reynolds volunteers to help at the garden as well. He states that you do reap what you sow. And helping others makes his heart feel good.

The land for the three acre garden was donated by a friend. It is located near Nick Flitchard Road.
