Job Blues for Trainers

People hire personal trainers to help get them into shape. Some merely want the expertise that a personal trainer can offer and others want someone to motivate them. However, personal trainers are only human, and they have their own gripes about some of their clients. An article from the New York Post explains.

As a personal trainer to some of New York’s rich, Kelvin Gary has seen his share of jerks that feel they are entitled. He claims that he has a zero tolerance policy towards such behavior. Gary recalls one time when a client, a day trader, had a bad day at work. Carrying that bad day to the gym, the client got loud and threw his cell phone across the room. Instead of yelling at the client, which Gary claims does not work, he took him aside and explained why that behavior was not acceptable.

Gary went on to further state that sometimes, clients need to vent. They need an outlet, and even though personal trainers are not therapists, clients can unload on them. Refocusing the client onto the reason they are there is key. Personal trainers are there to help you get fit.

An often occurring violation of the trainer-client dynamic occurs when the client begins developing sexual attraction or personal feelings for their trainer. Jayson Leisenring, a 44 year old personal trainer who has been in the business for 15 years states that he has been on the receiving end of unwanted advances over the years. A good personal trainer learns how to deflect such advances. Sleeping with a client is not the best way to go about getting them to meet their goals.

Perhaps the biggest gripe among personal trainers is inconsiderate clients. Matt Townsend, a personal trainer of 10 years, said that the most annoying clients in his eyes were those who canceled last minute numerous times. These clients would then complain about not seeing any results. One of his clients racked up an impressive 11 late cancellation charges in a row. She then complained in person that she was disappointed she wasn’t receiving more compliments about her arm definition.

Often, a personal trainer will charge you for a missed or canceled session. Some, however, like Gary, will just make you sweat more. If you get annoying, Gary will make you work.
