What to Look For in a CrossFit Coach

I’m a big fan of CrossFit. Part of my training methodology is to use kettle bells with CrossFit principles to improve the fitness of my clients. But what is CrossFit exactly, and how does it differ from standard exercise routines?

These are important questions. CrossFit locations, “boxes” in the lingo, are popping up all over the world. There’s over 12,000 of them so far. How do you know if you’re choosing the right CrossFit location for you and your fitness level?

In brief, CrossFit is a fitness regimen that was developed by Coach Greg Glassman over several decades. The core principles of CrossFit are:

* Fitness is “increased work capacity over broad time and modal domains” (i.e. the ability to do more, longer, and in many different ways.)

* To achieve that CrossFit has practitoners use “constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity.” A functional movement is a movement that is natural to the body like a pull up, as opposed to an isolating movement like most weight machines.

CrossFit is also the community that has sprung up to practice under these principles.

A good CrossFit coach for you will:

1. Be certified by CrossFit and maintain that certfication.

2. Have experience with someone of your current fitness level and your goals.

3. Know how to transition the daily exercise routines (“workout of the day” or WOD) to match your level of fitness.

There is no doubt that CrossFit works for improving fitness, but your coach must know how to handle your body type. Always ask if they have experience working with your special needs before enrolling. That being said, there are many fine CrossFit coaches who specialize in training people with special fitness needs.
