You Can Get Organic Food Anywhere, Even Alaska

Generally, climate change is thought of as something detrimental to the population. Even with positive news lately about the Antarctic sea ice, most would agree that a global rise in temperatures does not bode well for the planet. However, some have seen a silver lining as the mercury rises.

In Bethel, Alaska, temperatures have risen approximately 6 degrees on average. That is to say that the average temperature in this town in southwest Alaska has been six degrees warmer. In a place where most have relied on hunting and gathering for their food, this means that most of their food is flown in as migration patterns have changed.

However, Tim Meyers is finding that the rise in average temperatures is allowing him to do something about this: grow his own food. Previously, it had been impossible due to hard freezes through May to grow some crops outside. Now, due to climate change, Meyers is able to grow organic potatoes, cabbages, and kale outside. He also grows strawberries and other fruits and vegetables in greenhouses on his 15-acre organic farm.

When the rest of Alaska is seeing real economic and environmental harm due to the rise in temperatures, Meyers hopes to increase his crop output next year. Some of the impact that Alaska is facing includes having to reroute the famous Iditarod dog sled race, acidic waters, and wildfires. President Obama visited the state recently to speak on the challenges that climate change has wrought.
