Exercise May Improve Creativity

Part of my practice involves using nutrition and exercise to improve mental health. As you can read on the front page of this website, I was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome. It was through exercise and diet that I found a way to cope with my symptoms.

Exercise has so many health benefits that it is foolish not to do a little bit every day. Our nation is suffering from a lack of physical activity. Now research is showing that our sedentary attitudes may be affecting our creativity and imagination as well.

New brain research is showing that our creativity is generated in both sides of our brains and that the hippocampus is an important component of creativity. This region of the brain is primarily known for controlling our long-term memory, but studies in both amnesiacs and control groups have shown that this region of the brain activates when we’re told to imagine something as well. We also know that exercise can help stimulate this portion of the brain as well, so scientists are now testing to see if an increase in exercise helps improve imagination and thus creativity.

You really don’t need a lot of exercise every day to keep fit. Just 15-30 minutes a day is all you really need, and it doesn’t have to be in a gym either. If you need help formulating an exercise plan or a nutrition plan, consider getting a consultation.
