Turmeric & Diabetes

I want to touch on some of the amazing medicinal benefits of turmeric. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Turmeric is known for its major anti-cancer properties and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s the key ingredient to all types of curry dishes. One interesting thing that I came across was a study that was done and published in the Diabetes Care Journal. It included 240 adults with pre-diabetes who either took curcumin capsules, which are available as over-the-counter supplements, or a placebo. After nine months, a sixth of the placebo group patients developed type-II diabetes while none of the curcumin group did. Researchers believed this occurred because the supplement improved the function of beta cells. These are essential cells in the pancreas that release the hormone insulin which regulates blood sugar.  People with type-II diabetes have beta cells that aren’t able to produce enough insulin to meet the body’s requirements, partially because of developed resistance to insulin’s effects.

So for anyone that’s dealing with diabetes or just wants to live a preventative, holistic lifestyle, I personally recommend that you add turmeric root to your juice every day.  I incorporate a big chunk of turmeric root into my daily juice. If there are days when I’m on the go and I don’t have time to juice, I take curcumin turmeric capsules, powdered capsules, and pop them as well. If I ever have any joint pains, it works as a great anti-inflammatory.  You can do the research on just the components that curcumin brings to the table, as far as anti-cancer cells. Now that we also know that it helps with regulating and curbing the possibility of developing diabetes, it just gives us another reason why curcumin turmeric should be added to our daily supplements
