Chipotle Faces Heat about GMOs

The debate against labeling GMO food goes on, and many people are trying their best to avoid them. Eating out and staying GMO-free is a big challenge. One major restaurant chain has just been caught lying about their GMO status.

Here’s the beef, literally. Chipotle claimed that their meat products were 100% GMO-free. But a third-party GMO investigation group called The Non-GMO Product Standard has challenged that claim. They say that the feed given to those animals may still contain GMOs.

Part of the problem with labeling GMO is that there is no current federal labeling standard about what a GMO is and is not. The Non-GMO Product Standard is attempting to create a very strict certification process to assure people who want to completely avoid GMOs can.

Chipotle did admit that they do feed GMO feed to their non-GMO livestock, and that their soft drinks are also GMO, but claim that GMO feed doesn’t make non-GMO livestock bad because it doesn’t change their genes. I guess the reporter has never heard of biomagnification? This is process where pesticides and other harmful chemicals get concentrated up the food chain. Whose to say that GMO byproducts wouldn’t accumulate in an animals’ tissues and get back to us through a burrito?

It may be very difficult to stay away from GMOs for how, but keep awareness on the issue. Eating organic food is a very simple way to prevent many toxic chemicals from entering your body. For more dietary advice and how to reverse the effects of pesticides and other toxins, I’d be glad to give you a consultation.
