Get Up And Move!

You may have read the news stories around about how sitting is killing us. Those stories came out of a huge meta-study in Britain that examined nearly 800,000 participants to see how sitting for long periods would affect the human body. They said that people who sit the longest have increased diabetes, heart trouble, and premature death.

But is it the sitting position or is it the lack of movement that’s the problem? That’s what another set of research examined. This new research studied about 5,000 British civil servants over the course of 16 years. The study balanced out all the usual factors that make differences in health such as weight, age, gender, and socioeconomic status. They found that this group of people was healthier than the average UK citizen because they walked around a lot more to get to public transportation. This is despite the fact they all worked desk jobs. In fact, they spent about twice the amount of time walking than the average.

I don’t think that the findings contradict each other. Forcing yourself to stand up more often means that you’re moving more, and if you’re getting plenty of movement outside of your sitting time then you can sit for longer with less damage. The bottom line appears to be that if you get up and move a significant amount every day, the healthier you’ll become.
