Top Nutrition Trends of 2015

When it comes to nutrition and weight loss, there is no doubt that trends come and go. In the business, it is often trends that drive the industry. As 2015 comes to a close, we look back on some of this year’s most popular trends in the field of nutrition.

The year 2015 saw a change in the trend of counting calories. Instead, there was a shift towards eating real, raw, unprocessed foods. All of the most popular trends in health food and nutrition focused on this one goal.

Numerous studies have linked sugar to many health complications, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and weight gain. With these reports, we saw a shift towards a trend of no-sugar diets becoming popular ways to attempt to lose weight and alter our diets.

A popular Australian website called I Quit Sugar (IQS), saw a sharp increase in viewership. In 2015, the IQS website saw 30% more people complete their 8-week program to kick addiction to sugary sweets. In June, 700,000 people had completed the program. This month, the number of people reporting program completion stood at 1,180,000.

Another popular trend was improving gut heath. Along with this came the trend of optimizing digestion. Shoppers began stocking up on pro-biotic rich foods such as kefir, sauerkraut, and bone broth. Bone broth came in as the most popular gut health product of the year.

A 2015 report from the World Health Organization recommended consuming moderate meat amounts, specifically in red and processed meats. This prompted a switch to a more plant-based diet. Organic veggies and plant-based protiens were at the top of shopper’s lists. Plant-based proteins include nuts and seeds.

One of the biggest trends of the year was green juice. In a move to cut out the more sugary juices in favor of alkalizing greens, green juice became this year’s must-have health accessory. Pictures of fashion-forward green juicers on Instragram helped to bolster this trend.
